The basic 24/7 staffing formula
Weekly staffed hours = hours covered per day × days covered per week × people required at once. Divide that by the weekly hours available from one worker to get raw FTE. Round up for whole people, then separately consider relief, skills and work rules.
Why raw FTE is not enough
Capacity can still fail when only one worker has a required qualification, a night worker reaches a consecutive-work limit, someone is on leave, or the available workers cannot legally or operationally move between adjacent shifts. That is why Rosterzen shows both peak people needed at once and the broader workforce needed across the full week.

How many full-time employees are needed to cover one 24/7 position?
One continuously staffed position requires 168 staffed hours per week. At 40 available hours per worker, the raw mathematical requirement is 4.2 FTE, so at least five whole people before accounting for leave, training, qualifications, availability or rest rules.
Why does the calculator include relief capacity?
Raw FTE only divides staffed hours by worker hours. Real rosters also have leave, sickness, training, availability and working-time rules. Relief allowance is a planning input, not a universal percentage.
Does this prove my roster will work?
No. Two teams can have the same total hours and still schedule very differently because skills, overlapping shifts, rest and availability matter. The calculator estimates capacity; Rosterzen then tests your actual staff against the shifts that need covering.
